Honduras: CPTRT

The center for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of victims of torture and their families focuses on human rights and offers health services, consultations, therapy and self help for survivors of torture.

Originally founded to address issues of political violence, and disappearances, the CPTRT has in the last decade expanded its work to include broader human rights advocacy including adjudicating abuses or inhumane conditions inside Honduran prisons.

The prison massacre in 2003 at Porvenir prison in La Ceiba in which 61 gang members were murdered by guards and the negligence during a massive prison fire a year later at the San Pedro Sula prison– which claimed 104 prisoners’ lives—are prominent among cases in which the CPTRT has been a leading critical voice and advocate for justice and prison reform.
