The group includes Roman Catholic religious/clergy who focus on spiritual needs of the prison population, but is largely run by lay social workers that attend to the social needs of prisoners and their families. Education and employment projects are designed to promote personal development, improved quality of life and the construction of community.
A social worker with the Prison Ministry of the Catholic Church visits the prison school to talk with teachers and pupils who are having difficulties.
At the San Pedro Sula prison the Ministry supports a textile workshop, a candle making workshop, a bakery and classes from primary level to high school equivalency. In addition the psychologists and social workers make health and legal referrals for services they cannot provide directly.
