Abelito holds the remains of a US mortar fragment. The region where he lives near the Honduran border is a hot spot in the counterinsurgency war between Salvadoran government forces and FMLN insurgents. Aerial bombing, scorched earth policies and brutal torture and murder of suspected guerrillas by the US trained Salvadoran military has turned much of the population against the government. The flights conducting the bombings sometimes originate in Honduras where the US has an active military base. Copyright Donna DeCesare, 1988
